ABSTRACT:Augmentin-associated nausea, vomiting, and constipation are common side effects of oral penicillins. The effects of Augmentin on body weight and other body functions have not been studied in patients with food allergy. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a combination of Augmentin and amoxicillin/clavulanate on body weight, heart rate, heart rate, respiratory rate, and cardiac output. Healthy volunteers were randomly assigned to receive either Augmentin alone, or Augmentin plus amoxicillin/clavulanate (50 mg/kg). Blood samples were collected at baseline, 3, 7, 14, and 30 min after treatment, before treatment and after 14 and 30 min after treatment. Body weight and heart rate were measured. Heart rate was measured using a pulse oximeter. The body weight and heart rate were also determined. All volunteers treated with Augmentin, were also given an intravenous solution of amoxicillin/clavulanate, to prevent the gastrointestinal adverse effects. All patients were given oral Augmentin and had a body weight of <20 kg at baseline. All patients had a baseline body weight of 35 to 40 kg. Mean body weight of the Augmentin-treated patients was 32.4 ± 5.8 kg (mean ± standard error). All patients had a baseline body weight of 41.5 ± 7.9 kg. The mean heart rate of the Augmentin-treated patients was 8.5 ± 1.9 beats/min (mean ± standard error). The mean heart rate was increased by 22.5 beats/min and respiratory rate increased by 8.5 beats/min (mean ± standard error).
